Finally!! We have been waiting for these test results for quite some time yet. The actual measurements were conducted back in January. So what happened then? As noted in the Internet Evolution test report published last Thursday, “Vendors got the right to review their results and our interpretations related to their results“. Apparently, some vendors took longer for this process to finish than others. Let’s not speculate about the reasons here.

So this test is the biggest test of deep packet inspection bandwidth management gear that has been done so far. But it is only about three vendors, you may say. And that is not really big, right. (It must be noted that the individual measurement sessions were indeed quite big. Our technical test report with the detailed results is 53 pages long! It was a tremendous piece of work by EANTC.) EANTC did invite a lot more — over 20 vendors of DPI equipment. So where are all the others?

The answer can only be given by those who did no participate in the test, or vetoed against the publication of their results. This highlights a general problem of the DPI industry: poor transparency. In the current debate about the negative impact of DPI technology on net neutrality, online privacy and freedom of speech, this secretiveness can only hurt the cause of vendors and network operators.
